Quickstart Guide

This guide will help you successfully get started using Real English subscription sites. Procede through the document step-by-step.

Step 1

Is your computer ready?

Real English subscription sites are developed for computers running Windows operating systems 98, Millenium, 2000, XP or Vista.

Minimum Requirements for the older versions of Windows: a Pentium 200 with 32 MB RAM and a graphics card able to display thousands of colors at a screen resolution of 1024 x 768. Your computer must also be equipped with a sound card and speakers or a headset. Keep in mind that these are minimum requirements.

High-speed Internet access is required.

The following web browsers are supported:

A high-speed Internet connection is recommended for best performance.

Step 2

Real English videos are developed for playback on Real Network's RealPlayer. RealPlayer is a FREE audio/video application.

Step 3 (optional)

Set up audio file playback with RealPlayer

We recommend that you use RealPlayer as your MP3 audio player while using Real English, but it is not required. Real English prefers RealPlayer for
its ease of use and operability with both Real English video and audio, but
the MP3 audio files will play in any MP3 player of your choice.

To set RealPlayer as your default MP3 player:

• Click on Start >> Control Panel >> Folder Options >>File Types.
  Scroll down the alphabetical list and click on "MP3 – MP3 Audio".
  
• Click on Modify.
  
• Scroll down the list of programs. Choose the RealPlayer. Click on OK.
  
• If the MP3 files are associated with the Quick Time Player on your computer, we recommend that you uninstall this program if you do not need it for other applications. It is very disagreeable because it plays "on top" of Real English (or any other program) and it seems impossible to make it play in the background in some versions of Windows. The RealPlayer stays in the background. You hear the sound files but you do not see the player. This is the perfect situation. You can easily look at the Real English pictures and text while you listen to the words and sentences.

Step 4

Choose a subscription

Real English offers three different online subscriptions for accessing Real English videos and interactive lessons: Real English Online, Gold Pass and Gold Pass for Teachers.

Step 5

Register for access to Real English Online, our FREE subscription trial.

1. Click on the "Subscribe – It's Free" button located on the home page:
2. Then click on the green and yellow button:
3. Click on "Yes" if you see a Windows message concerning certificates, and then click on "I accept" if you agree with the " Real English Usage Guidelines and User Agreement". You must agree to continue to the next step.
   
   NOTE: We care about your privacy, Real English Online registration is secure.
   
   
4. Follow the instructions on your screen: choose your country and click on "Go".
   
   
5. Fill in all the fields marked with * (an asterisk).
   
   
6. Be sure that your email address is correct. You can not access the free lessons without a valid email address.
   
   
7. You will receive an "Activation Email" very quickly. Click on the blue linkin the email. You arrive at the Real English site. Click on "Activate my subscription".
   
   NOTE: SPAM filters may intercept your activation email. If you are running a SPAM filter and you have not received your Activation Email, please check your JUNK folder. SPAM filters have been known to capture legitimate email from Real English. If you don't receive your Activation Email within 15 minutes, you may have your activation email sent to you again. Click here to have your activation email resent to you.)
   
   
8. That's it! Now you are ready to login. On the right side of the screen, click the login link.
   Login using your username, the same as your email address and the password that you chose in step 5. Click on "Login".
   
9. Click on the "Lesson Quickstart Guide" located on the subscription home page to learn about using the Lessons. Information found in this document is very helpful for getting you started.
   
   
10. To get to lessons, click on the Videos/Lessons button at the top:
    
    
11. Click on the Videos/Lessons index link from the drop down list, or choose a skill level lesson from the menu:
    
    
12. Follow the instructions in the lesson you choose.
    
    
13. When you are finished, logout by clicking on
